So what's all the fuss about, I read in the papers Brad Pitt has been paid gazillions of dollars to be in a beer advert for the middle of it.

Why does everyone get so excited, is it the US version of the FA Cup (football trophy) because we don't get *this* excited about that  :-\

it is the championship game!

comercials are like millions for 30 seconds. It is like the NBA finals, baseball playoffs..but only one game!

Football is a big sport here and this is it!

the whole season comes down to one game!

It's the biggest sporting event in the US!  People have big Super Bowl parties that they've planned for weeks.  Everyone gathers around the big screen TV cheering (or booing) the teams.  Betting on the outcome of the game is also very popular.  And like goofyjas says, what other event could the television network sell 30 second commercials for millions!

I hate to say it, but I would rather miss christmas than the super bowl.  :)  But I am a mulit-faceted fanatic.

Well then - I think it's going to be on UK TV, I might pop it on and see if I can suck in some of the atmosphere :)....

But if it wouldn't trouble you chaps too much do you think you could have it earlier so I don't get to bed too late

It has practically become an American holiday.  In fact, Super Bowl Sunday has the lowest crime rates of the year.  It really is a National event- Those that love football or sporting tune in for the game, but other will watch just for the commercials.  Because their are so many people watching the game, companies are willing fork out millions just for a few seconds of air time.  The really neat thing is that companies really go for some creative commecials that are often very funny.

I happen to have a particular interest in this game, as I am a HUGE and lifelong Eagles fan.  I live just under two hours from Philadelphia, and have grown up watching all my relatives root for the Eagles.  

I know how absolutely crazy soccer fans are in Europe, so I doubt that this comes close to matching some of the better games their.  But for those of you not from America, I would encourage you to tune for a few minutes at least.

Am I all alone here??  I have never liked football, and feel like everyone's scary Aunt on superbowl Sunday.  (hence, an outcast)Thank goodness my spouse isn't a football fan either, so we're going out to dinner and seeing a movie tomorrow.

I'm a Brit, as you know, and I've seen each Superbowl for years now....awesome stuff. I actually follow the Atlanta Falcons when Sky show the games live.....what i think most Brits find so hard to comprehend about the Superbowl is that it crosses lines between fans....ALL fans of FOOTBALL watch the  Superbowl whereas here, really, only fans of the teams involved and a few football neutrals watch the FA Cup because of the petty apathy that exists betwwen football fans here for any team other than their own...

Thing is, we have our own Ads here in the UK so these amazing ads that have been paid millions for are completely lost on us. I'm not a big sports fan and so that makes the whole thing a lot less appealing to me.... :(

The thing is, the ads won't be all that good this year.  Advertisers are running scared because of the Janet Jackson wardrobe incident during halftime last year, and now everyone is afraid to offend the "average" person watching the Super Bowl.

Well put Ed!!   :)  As a New Englander I am rooting for the Patriots today along with everyone else in our area.  For all you non Americans you have to realise that from childhood this game is looked up to as the ultimate achievement in football.  As Ed said even if you are not a fan of the two teams playing you are watching the game as these are the two best teams fighting for the championship.  The TV commercials and half-time show are great extras.  I too wish the game came on earlier.  It must be hard on you folks in England being 5 hours ahead of us with the game starting at 11:30 P.M. your time.  

I'll be there!!! Despite having a 9am tutorial plus I'm going to see The Killers tonight at the NME Awrads tour in Cardiff, so my bed will be my best friend tomorrow!!!!

But yea all football fans watch the game, bet on the game, pools are all over the place.. even non fans watch the game just because it is the superbowl!

Anyway I am kidding.. I just hope it is a well played game and not a blow out, win or lose I am glad they made it this far..oh and please dont let it come down to a fieldgoal at the end because quite frankly I am sick of hearing about Vinatieris superbowl winning field goals :P

He's never been married, but I think he's had a few girlfriends in recent years.  Maybe what you're thinking about is that his grandmother died earlier this week.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Jas, but the Pats are going to win their third Super Bowl in four years tonight! :D

well when if they lose I expect to see an apology! and then you change your icon to an eagle!

We will see after the game I guess. But I made a promise that when they won the superbowl i would wear my jersey fo a week straight, and it has gone on today.. I dont plan on taking it off for 7 more days :)

At this point I think I should inform everyone that I watched the entire game which was awesome and that I've yet to go to bed.......and yes, I did attend my Land Law tutorial.....Iam HARDCORE

I stayed up fairly late, watching all of the post-game hoopla and ordering memorabilia online.  This explains why we overslept this morning and my husband was half an hour late for work.  I don't think he'll be the only one, though!

Just saw this AP story about the halftime show:

The NFL wanted a safe halftime show after last year's Janet Jackson fiasco, and Paul McCartney delivered.

When McCartney stripped off his jacket midway through his Super Bowl halftime performance, all he revealed was a long-sleeved red shirt. Nothing malfunctioned. And if he wore any nipple jewelry, he mercifully kept it to himself.

Don't know about anyone else, but I honestly don't want to know whether he has piercings! :o

I loved the commercials and Half-Time Show with Paul McCartney.  He is one class act and can still sing wonderfully.  I wish he had time to sing more than 4 songs but the ones he did were just great!   :)

What was your favorite Super Bowl commercial folks?   Mine was the one for Amerquest where the cat spilled the tomato sauce from the stove all over the floor and all over itself and the boyfriend/husband picked up the cat while holding a knife making it look like he was killing the cat when his wife/girlfriend walks into the house.  The look on her face was priceless!!  

The other cool commercial I liked was for Ford showing their new Mustang Convertable.  I noticed the license plate on the Mustang was from California and the dude was so in love with the vehicle driving into some cold State in the Winter with the convertable top down thus freezing him in place at the traffic light.  The Police Officer's tapping him on the cheek with his pen was classic and that grin on the frozen driver's face was wild!   :)  Beautiful looking car - glad to see the Mustang returning to its classic lines!!   :)

As for the game it was a fight right to the end.  Both teams had the chance for victory.  Congrats to the New England Patriots for the win!!  :)
