The Eagles wanted to make the destruction of the Dark Lord (the one that is not Voldemort ;D) as exciting as possible... what kind of a story oould it have been if it went - and Bilbo gave Frodo the ring, Frodo gave it to Gandalf, Gandalf caled 'Massive Eagles' airlines and the Ring was destroyed? But I'm sure Frodo could have hitched a lift with the Eagles. I can't quite see an eagle wearing a ring so I'm not sure how susceptable they are to its power. Would have been a good idea to ask them anyway, even if they said no :p
