: Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz November 29, 2004, 03:03:34 AM Hi folks
Well, I think we are the first "live wire" shackers back from memorabilia. It was so great to see so many of you there, and it was also great to meet some other Shackers for the first time too :) I'll tell most of the story with pictures. Here was the spiritual home of the Shack; the Cards2Collectables stall. I don't seem to have a picture of it with the banner up (which didn't go up 'til about quarter to ten on the Saturday morning), but hopefully Olly, Ed or Chris will have a picture of it in situ - the banner had turned out wonderfully and we had a perfect frame behind us to hang it on! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/OllystallwithOlly.jpg) This photo is a bit blurred, sorry about that but we've stitched a couple of photos together to show you the whole stall: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/Ollystable.jpg) Lots of people came to pick up their Yak Shack badges, and who can blame them...? Even Lawrence Makore (Lurtz / The WitchKing / Gothmog) was caught wearing one: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/LawrenceYakShack.jpg) They were really impressive - thanks Chris *butter him up here folks as we'll be needing him to do more :P* When Mark wasn't sketching or providing general entertainment behind the C2C stall, we went to meet Warren Martineck - a very famous sketchcard artist who has sketched most recently for the Xena and Thunderbirds sets and has done other interesting sets like Star Trek Voyager etc. Needless to say we had him sketch for us :) Here is the man himself with his work (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/MrMartineck_small.jpg) and these are the two sketches he did for us: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/Sketches.jpg) At dinner later that night we were LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY (like Kylie) enough to sit next to Inkworks' owner - Allan Caplan who (probably when he spotted I wasn't a Buffy or Angel fan) enthused about his next big product, a set to celebrate the movie "Robots" (of course Mark's eyes lit up - as he is very much into anything computer animated/generated and arty). He kindly gave us a promo pack the next morning including two Robots promo cards, I think he plans to have 10 autos and lots of sketches in the set, along with 35mm cards, but we shall see - it's not out until February/March time). The promos are viewable here: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/Robotsp1.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/RobotsR-SD-2004.jpg) and the suitably embarassing photos from dinner are here: Me with Allan on the right: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/TYSInkworksUnite.jpg) And with Mark on the left (clealy looking towards the camera is for wimps ;)) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/MarkandRozatZorbas_small.jpg) And last but not least (well at least until everyone else joins in with their photos) here's Mark meeting two of the stars of a British comedy - Red Dwarf: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Roz_qmw/Memo%20Nov%202004/MarkCraigandRobertRD_small.jpg) I had a fantastic time... not very much sleep but a fantastic time. A big thank you to the guys at Cards Inc for letting us crash their big dinner do, and of course a masssssssssssssssssive thank you to Olly4Kay / Cards2Collectables who sponsored and looked after us like a King and Queen whilst we were there. So come on everybody - I saw lots of you with cameras in hand, so please do share :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Trey November 29, 2004, 06:13:09 AM YES please do share some more exciting adventures from Memorabilia....thanks for the pics Roz.
Unfortunately I couldn't make it..I had plans......and there was also the fact that I am on the other side of the world... :P OK I would really have cancelled ANY plans if I had a chance to go but :( alas, my private jet was at the mechanic's and not available to use :P : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Goofyjas November 29, 2004, 06:50:38 AM Sounds like you guys had some fun!
AWSEOME sketch card you got there. 1/1 !! Did LM just come up and ask about it or how did that happened? Pretty cool that he was wearing one :) get anything signed? :P : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz November 29, 2004, 04:07:40 PM Sorry to hear your Jet is out of service Trey >:(
;) No actually I didn't get anything signed by Lawrence, Mark had a Red Dwarf thing signed by the last cast member he needed: Craig Charles (the guy in the hat with the dark glasses on) which he seems very pleased about, but that was it for signings. Besides, at the price of not a great deal more than a star's signature, those 1/1 skecthes were pretty cool. I wonder if they will ever do a LOTR sketch series, I know Topps had some interest in doing an Art set but I can't help but think it would be nice if they had sketchers who were involved in the making of the film rather than the talented band of sketch artists that are out there.... well, only time will tell - the point is that Lee and Howe are always happy to do a brief sketch if they see you so it's unlikely they'd say "no" to topps : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Kay November 29, 2004, 04:38:20 PM Me with Allan on the right I wonder who took that wonderful picture!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Kay November 29, 2004, 04:47:15 PM We had a walk around the show a while after Lawrence had been given the Yak badge; 4 hours later he was still wearing the next "must have" in fashion!!
Very cool!!! :) :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz November 29, 2004, 04:50:33 PM Wow, that's great - the next thing we know he'll be posting :) "no that's not true, I did that not Viggo" etc etc... "did I tell you about the time I was knocked out by Viggo" etc... lol that's cool!
: Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : MakTheYak November 29, 2004, 05:03:29 PM Wow that's great! We thought he'd probably just take it off as soon as we were out of sight :)
He's a dedicated fan, for sure! : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Ed... Van Halen November 29, 2004, 05:44:46 PM Just for public viewing here's my Martineck sketch, courtesy of Roz's hosting.

Rob : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : savage727 November 30, 2004, 04:03:05 AM Hi Roz:
Thanks for posting the cool photos and stories!! Olly & Kay: Great job!! : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : samwise16 November 30, 2004, 07:47:52 PM well well well as for my very short stay i found it quite alright, the whole place is a bit pants to be honest but im a showmasters fan. I didnt like that Expo was there promoting 2 stars which were £20 for an auto and £20 for a photograph with one of them, crazy
on the saturday i never went, i was meant to be getting some Tom Feltons Autos but a party was arranged for my My freinds and my birthday so i attended that ;D I got quite drunk and was supposed to be at memo for about 10ish, ended up there at 2ish :'( sorry roz Olly & Kays stall was well nice, i like the binders being Harry Potter and not Ultra Pro, very posh ;) Thanks for the plate, my girly side was cool with not having one for him, to be honest i think he would have wanted harry on the front of the plate ::) was good to see MPC, had a lot of stock, one day i will work for him...maybe, if he pays well :P Overall it was good, and fun. I was a bit more concerned with chasing this girl lol but for what i saw and the time i spent with Olly & Kay and MPC it was well worth going ;D Thanks roz & Mark for my present, the Tshirt was wicked i wore it with the badge and did very little promoting, But i promise i will next time ;) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 01, 2004, 06:47:08 AM Guys, anyone can have a sketch done by Warren. These are his freelance sketchcards; he takes requests, and you can order them off his website.
http://www.warrenmartineck.com/sketchcards.html It's just nice to meet him in the flesh too :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : samwise16 December 01, 2004, 01:25:54 PM I think im going to have my mum buy me one of them for my xmas pressie ::)
: Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Nienna December 01, 2004, 03:20:29 PM Ooooooooooooooooo cool! :D
Thanks for posting that link Roz ... I was just admiring the cards you and Ed got done at the weekend and regretting not coming down even more to see you at Memo! :-\ Next time eh?! ;) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 01, 2004, 03:34:27 PM I did see him do a sketch of Aragorn which was pretty "mint" as Samwise16 would say!
I was pondering one of those when I thought of the ring and that was the end of it! There's tonnes of dramatic scenes people could request - if anyone does get some PLEASE post them here as I know we'd all be interested :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : savage727 December 01, 2004, 06:06:05 PM Roz:
Thanks for the link - he does outstanding work! I am going to contact him about doing a sketch card of Aragorn like my avatar and another one of Spiderman when I have some spare cash after the holidays! :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : ferdinand_the_yak December 01, 2004, 06:11:40 PM :O
I would LOVE an inked/colour of Legolas! : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : savage727 December 01, 2004, 06:15:59 PM Gee with all the interest in Warren's sketch cards it is too bad we did not have this info about a month ago when the Secret Santa was set up! How cool would that have been to ask for a specific character card from your Secret Santa of either a LOTR's, HP, Star Wars, or anything else for that matter!! :)
: Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 01, 2004, 06:21:07 PM Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I think if anyone wanted to do that they would have to email Warren and ask if there's going to be time. He's sketching for the Robots set over Christmas so he may not be in much of a Christmassy mood :P Top notch idea though : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Ed... Van Halen December 01, 2004, 06:24:17 PM OK, I've decided that I'm going to get something quite cool done....I'm buying two sketch cards so Warren can do a sketch across the two of them of Gandalf creating his forcefield on the Bridge of Khazzad-Dum with the Balrog dominating the background!!
Can't wait! EVH : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : savage727 December 02, 2004, 05:59:40 AM Now that sounds awsome Ed!! :)
: Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : MartineckArt December 03, 2004, 12:41:43 AM Hi all,
(Thanks for the link Roz) Just wanted to say hi and thanks to all for all the nice compliments. I had a great time at the show even though I didnt get a chance to wander around and spend some $. It would have been nice but I was a trifle busy. You can see the "I was up till 3 in the morning sketching" look on my face in the above pic. Thanks Roz for not posting the pic of me standing between the 2 towers. Even though I was on my tippy toes, you guys are tall. As far as commisions, I am accepting them now but my schedule is heavy with loose ends and prepwork for the Robots set that starts late next week so I cant garentee any thing for Christmas. It looks more like mid - January. Later WM : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Ed... Van Halen December 03, 2004, 12:57:46 AM Hi Warren,
Thanks for posting!! Got my Wolverine card by my monitor (Blood still looks cool)!!! looking forward to your Robots stuff, not surprised your schedule is packed....my balrog duo-card will ahve to wait! EVH : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : savage727 December 03, 2004, 02:15:29 AM Hello Warren:
Welcome! I will be contacting you mid January to do a few commission pieces for me. I like Mark love Spiderman and Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings so those are the two cards I will be talking to you about. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : mcgonagall December 03, 2004, 09:07:11 AM Hi Warren from Perth Australia,
I too will be contacting you in mid january my eldest daughter is a spiderman fans so I would love a sketch i can give her for her birthday . Love all the sketches i have seen Hope you have a great christmas and a happy new year Marcia ( mcgonagall ) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Goofyjas December 03, 2004, 09:13:20 AM thanks for stopping in!
I have sent you an email already and will be placing an order for what I want to be 9 cards :P Just need to finish up the ideas I had :( : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 03, 2004, 04:05:01 PM I wonder guys, if (when you are ready) it would be wise to put in your order as soon as possible and email with a description of what you would like.
If it's something new to Warren (as I think many of these things might be) what about including a link to a picture of what he is to draw in the email. I am not sure how big his inbox is so where possible try to send a web link to a picture, if there are any problems with doing this (you don't have a image host etc) then send them to me and I'll sort them out). Otherwise by mid January you might be in his "mid Feb" pile. Just a suggestion :-\ : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : savage727 December 03, 2004, 05:13:53 PM Good thought Roz! :)
Jason: Me thinks you are looking to have Warren sketch maybe The Fellowship characters for your 9 card order? :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 03, 2004, 06:18:53 PM lol - not necesarrily - what about this... the whole of the LOTR in a single 9 pocket page
1) The finding of the ring 2) Wraiths chase teeny Hobbits with ring & stab Frodo 3) Council of Elrond sends Hobbits, Elves, Dwarfs, Wizards and Men to destroy ring 4) Frodo and Sam go off alone... meet the rather shady Gollum character 5) Battle of Helms Deep at it's most desperate 6) Picture of Rohirrim plus Gandalf saving the day at HD 7) Oliphants arrive at the great Battle of the Pelennor Fields 8) Ring is destroyed - (Frodo holding and dropping ring into Mount Doom) 9) Boats sailing into the west with 2 tiny Hobbits on board I think it would rock... but it smashes through his limit of 2 characters a card somewhat... I believe the battle of Helms Deep had more than 2 people involved... although we know Aragorn and Gimli did all the hard work :P : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : MakTheYak December 03, 2004, 06:27:11 PM Either of those options sounds well cool!
Warren - just out of interest, would you be prepared to divulge to secret* identity of where you get your cards printed that you sketch on? *May in fact not be secret : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 03, 2004, 06:42:52 PM lol just in case Warren you are thinking anyone is going to make fake WM sketches :P then no ;)
Mark draws this: http://www.theyakshack.co.uk/images/comics/pirates/pirates20040714.gif and Jason (Goofyjas) is meeting Alan Lee in a couple of weeks and would like him to do a small sketch if possible. The great thing about sketchcards are that they aren't a huge space to fill and the detail from then on depends on the mood of the artist :P (Knowing Alan Lee he'll fit a very detailed Osiliath on a sketchcard). : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : MartineckArt December 03, 2004, 08:47:29 PM OK, maybe this will take some of the guess work out of this for you guys.
Send in sketch requests at anytime. Orders will be taken and drawn in the order they are received. (So yes, Mid-Jan may become Mid-Feb fast.) Timeline also depends on Official work load which takes priority over commissions. I can Google just about any character reference myself, but send images if you want a specific drawing/look or if they are family members. Dont worry about my bandwith. Dont be afraid to order something weird, Ive seen it all. The person that ordered a card of Yoda cutting Jar Jar in half with a lightsaber needless to say didnt have reference but I didnt have any problems. If you know what character but your having a hard time thinking of a pose or scene, no problem, I will come up with something really Kick-ass... thats my job. For the entire LOTRs story on a 9 card page, as cool as that would be, I may have to reconsider my prices for something like that..... ;) My printed cards, Ancient Chinese Secret. Find a paper stock you like to work on and just bring it, with a file of what you want printed, to a printer. The printer should help you out. Its "basically" that easy. I suggest not adding a coating. Too many chances of screwing up. ;) Later WM : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 03, 2004, 08:55:08 PM LOL I was thinking of asking for a quote (for the LOTR in 9 cards) in the new year... since there's *rather* a lot of detail in it. But in the meantime if you guys (LOTR experts) could help me whittle down to 9 key scenes that would be great - as it stands now Helms Deep merges into Pelennor :-\
Thanks for checking back WM :) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Kay December 04, 2004, 02:53:04 AM This is the very cool sketch card Olly got for me at the weekend.
Now i have a list of characters i would like to add along side this one. ;D ;D (http://www.cards2collectables.com/cardtalk/spike.jpg) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Nienna December 04, 2004, 03:57:50 AM What a luvverly card Kay! ;D
Hee hee looks like Olly won't know what he's started getting you this one! ;) ~~*~~ I just wanted to say "Hi" to Warren too. I feel sure I'll be emailing you in the not-too-distant future to see if you'll quote me for a sketch or two. Like Roz, I'm finding it hard to choose what to get you to draw considering the wealth of images there are available. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this Forum ... and try not to work yourself to death! ::) : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : MartineckArt December 08, 2004, 07:25:17 AM This post is to anyone in the UK waiting on leftover Sketches by me that you ordered at the Memoribilia show. Just to let you know, all sketches are getting shipped out tomorrow. I dont know how long it will take for shipping, but email me upon receipt if you like to let me know they made it safely.
Thanks for waiting. Warren Martineck : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : MakTheYak December 09, 2004, 11:00:51 PM a card of Yoda cutting Jar Jar in half with a lightsaber Awesome! Jar Jar so had it coming... seriously! : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Roz December 10, 2004, 07:31:37 PM Did you guys see this?
Jas/Goofyjas met Alan Lee - ALAN LEE and had him draw this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v477/Goofyjas/AlanLee032.jpg) WOW - : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : Nienna December 11, 2004, 01:14:42 AM :o--speechless-- :o
Treasure it Goofy! ;D : Re:Memorabilia survivors (just) :o) : savage727 December 11, 2004, 08:32:17 PM Jason:
Talk about one of a kind!! Outstanding. Did you ask him to draw Gimli or did Alan come up with it himself? If you picked Gimli why so and not another character? Just curious. :) |
