Following in the footsteps of such comic book film bows as "Spider-Man" and "X2: X-Men United," Marvel armored avenger "Iron Man" is staking out an early May release date, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment film is scheduled to open May 2, 2008, the studio said Thursday.

Directed by Jon Favreau, the project marks the first motion picture to be produced by Marvel under its alliance with the studio.

Last I had heard.......and this was months ago, so don't quote me and get upset...........was that Tom Cruise was the leading candidate for the role of Tony Stark.  I CERTAINLY hope that this is just a rumor.

Here's hoping that Favreau goes Superman style and picks up an unknown actor to play Stark.

I was never into comics as a kid, but the few I did own were Iron Man!  Cool  No, Tom Cruise would NOT be my choice to play him!  Tongue

As a few others I was never a comic reader and even now as im older only seldomly will read or buy one.The film versions of the majority of the comic heroes have been fantastic,Iron Man hopefully will also be one of these success stories.I used to watch the cartoon and loved it,like many on here I agree that Tom Cruise would not be my first choice and feel also like some that it should be an unknown.
This gives a new talent to shine in the Hollywood lights and be recognised, all very well using A list actors but we do need to start seeing more new talent coming through and seems easier in some respects when making a comic book film as most unknowns performances have been outstanding like the new Superman Returns film.

Cheers
