What I find interesting is that Graham and Rup got the same tax charge, that's unusual,

At least they're consistent.... i would have been mega peeved if graham got charged less than me, (and i'm sure graham would have been peeved if had been charged less)

Becasue the declaration was $60 on each box, then it makes sense really!!

Yes, it should be the same. I imported some items and at the same time so did a friend of mine (exact same items, exact same value declared on the parcel) . I was charged £12 less in taxes.

So that's why it surprised me.

If yours, then your friend should have queried it with HMCE. I have done in the past and got a refund from them as they overcharged me. Ofcourse if it was hers that was correct, then you were one lucky bunny

Joanna - the Post Office and the Customs people are two different departments,which is why we're 'obliged' to pay the Post Office handling fee for the postal staff to collect the Duty from us, which in they in turn pay to Inland Revenue on our behalf. I remember paying one of these extra charges with new unused postage stamps ... my postman suggested it and it's quite legal too!

Hey Nienna, Inland Revenue and Customs (HMCE) are also two completely different departments 

I thought Customs & Excise were now part of Inland Revenue since early last year Rup!?
A lot of staff were shuffled around in the Gershon Report recommendations at any rate and DWP felt the brunt of it.
