Where do I look to find out the "Book" prices on the trading cards?

Hello, I have noticed that sometimes when a card is up for auction the seller will state that the "book" value for the card is a certain amount  . Where would I go or where (besides The Yak Shack) (Not that I don't value the Yak Shack as a guide to the cards) would I look, to find out the "book" value of the Harry Potter Cards? Or is it the Appraisal value of the cards?  I know that doesn't sound right. (I am not sure what the terminology is)  But if say I wanted to find the value of an antique toy (barbie or GI Joe.. for example) There are books that can give you that information. I figure there are probably books or a book that would give some idea of the value of the cards. I hope you can help me. 

My HP cards have more sentimental value to me than any thing, but I suppose there is a monetary value as well, as I paid quite a bit for some of them!  (probably too much) but oh well!  I was just wondering, I used to have a box of base ball cards and my grandma gave them away because she thought I had out grown them!  Well if any one wants to help me out I would appreciate it bunches!

PS I also need an avatar... I am completely computer illiterate, I read the suggestions, I just don't understand them. l If any one would like to hellp me here as well, I would really appreciate it as well.

Non-Sport Update Magazine, also called NSU, has a price guide in each issue.  It also publishes two books, Gum Guide 2 (a reference book for over 5,000 sets from 1960-2004) and the Promo Card Encyclopedia & Price Guide 2005 Edition.  You can find them here:

Please be aware that many people on the Yak Shack do not agree with the card values listed in NSU, at least for HP cards.  It's my personal opinion that NSU's prices are on the high side, based more on what a person would pay for a card in a shop rather than reflecting the prices you'd find on eBay.

Hello, Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.  I appreciate your wanting to help me with my avatar also. Thanks alot!!  I was thinking about a fairy, (simple is perfect!) I do like the way yours dances but I would be more than happy with a nonanimated one. Thanks alot for the info I found it very useful, my friend and I are thinking of getting a subscription. I think what is being said here is the prices for HP cards found in the NSU guide is what we want when we try to sell our cards. But when we want to buy them we want the decimal point moved over one spot to the left.

Yea I know what you mean I like the decimal to be over a llittle too
