Were you able to see the thermal images of the shuttle coming in for a landing?  At one point, TV here was showing the view of the runway from inside the cockpit.

yeah, we had sky news on so we got the same images as you; looked amazing, pity it was in the dark though...

So overall - what's the verdict? Despite media mayhem I think it was probably a success - after all - it was a test flight

I think the fact that they got back safely, despite all of the problems, makes the mission a success.  It also makes one wonder whether those same problems have occurred on the other flights, but were never noticed. Undecided

it's great they made it back. the space program needs some success to keep it going. what little problems they had wasn't really anything big. i can't wait for the next launch.

I read something which I think said they normally had about 200 impacts to the shuttle during takeoff, and this time only had 10 or so, and they were far more paranoid than usual so I would also say it was a success

I was happy to turn on the tv and find out that the Discovery made a safe landing.All i have to say is congratulations and well done to the crew of the Discovery and I am glad everything turned out all right. After all of the terrosrists problems it was nice to have a bit of good news on the news for once. Grin
