Rita's ability to change was very important to the continuity with the book. She was the thread that tied all of the events together.
Rita was the situp for OotP, too. Remember that in OotP she writes a story for Luna's dad's paper, The Quibbler, where she tells Harry's real story.
Also, remember in the movie that when Hagrid borached the subject of her parentage  to Madam Maxim she went berserk.

I can just see the big wigs at Warner Bros.

PS. I know Marie Antoinette never said that. It was actually said 100 years before her by Marie-Therese, the wife of Louis XIV. (And this is even in doubt.)

I FINALLY saw it today. And I loved it, I'm not mad keen on Quidditch so thats no loss to me. The only thing that really concerns me is that Barty Crouch Jnr was left with Snape, instead of having his soul sucked out. AS we have yet to decide which side Snape butters his bread wouldn't it be a bit dodgey him being left with crouch 'whoops he got away' but unless they are rewriting the whole series this didn't happen but in the film it could have.

Maybe we are taking it for granted as most of us have read the books?

That is probably most of are problems. We loved the book but that book couldnt be the 5 hour long movie we wanted My mom has never read a single books but she understands it fine and didnt get disappointed at what should have been there
